As you have rightly pointed out LifeShaker has not undergone many updates in recent times, however we do have a list of feature requests with regards to any future development and the structure of the to-do's has been noted as an area for review. We are currently exploring how LifeShaker may be developed on other platforms and how this might benefit the application whilst retaining its simplistic usability and unique approach.

I have been using LifeShaker off and on for a few years. The whole "skaker" idea and limiting me to a choice among 9 boxes is FABULOUS for me. I quickly became my favorite app and central point of my work planning. But, over time, one issue became more and more important... I started testing other tools. To my surprise there is nothing that offers me the "shaking" feature -- which is a very natural process for me. There are other tools that limit my view to a few (or one) item to keep my giant list from overwhelming me.

After many trails I settled on Remember the Milk. It has enough features that I can automate a "lifeshaker-like use case". For example I can search for short duration, high-priority tasks in a certain category. But as you can guess this is (far) more trouble than clicking the shaker icon in the app.

So what's the killer failing? The absolutely rigid ranking of sequences within a project. Sometimes this is true -- there exists an unalterable dependency in task sequence -- but I often found that there were many independent tasks as well and I would get "stuck" with what LifeShaker said was the next task in a project when I knew full well that there were other tasks in that project that I could do, or preferred doing, next.

My suggestion? Tasks can be identified as Independent or Dependent within a project. When "shaking" Lifeshaker will offer ANY of the Independent tasks within a project, not just the one that happens to be at the top of the list. However it will only offer a Dependent task once the predecessor task has been completed. You can represent this in the UI by using an outline view -- everything at Level 1 is Independent while everything at level 2 is dependent. Or you can use bullets for the independent tasks and numbered tasks to show the sequence of dependent tasks.

Thank you for reading. I note that not too many updates are coming out of LifeShaker. But I hope you'll consider this feature since it would resucitate my use of what is otherwise a terrific tool -- the only one that really made me productive instead of paralyzed as my lists grew!

.. I'm just 'trying' the app out and with my first clicks I've run into my first gotchas:

- Why oh why can't I right click to add categories/goals/steps - you have to click all over the place just to add something! A huge time waster & interrupter of thought.
- Also if a 'step' is longer than the width of the window, it doesn't display a carriage return - even when you're editing - this is crazy - it should open up a new window really while you're editing.

I was hoping to use this not only as a To Do tool but also as a Creative Notepad and I'm sad to say, already I don't think it's the one. Big shame - I like how it's laid out - much more visual than the other programs I've seen...

Sorry for my delay of answering.

Goldfinch, I am with you at the point an application fitting needs is best for money.
I tried Things aswell, as OmniFocus too, both with their iPhone-Apps, both paid. Also
the Hitlist, given within a bundle. I´ve tried Remember the milk (as a Pro), some
iPhone(only) apps, great tools alltogether, worth the money and payment is not
the fact I am worried about.

I´ve learned a lot by using these tools, best for me is my collection of moleskines and
in about a few days my new X47 timer ..... but as you´ve said, I really was blown away
by the ideas and simplicity of LifeShaker, but the price is more than a no-brainer at all,
it´s for that application a bit to grown up.

Maybe I have to try it some other time again :-)

But, the developer is very shy I think or what about an official statement?

I paid for Things and for The Hit List (as we all know, buying to-do software magically cures those bad habits which have led to long to-do lists in the first place!) and the initial impressions didn't pan out. I needed something simpler than THL, and yet with some graphic presence to catch my eye. Now I've paid for Lifeshaker, and it does seem to be working better for me. It has re-orderable steps, which is very handy.

I'm really enjoying Lifeshaker's ease of use, so I do not want to add extras like times due...but there is an option that I think would be useful:

Add in prefs the choice to have an item remain not completed even though all steps have been checked off.

Why? I use the steps sometimes for the things I have to do before I do the thing itself: the task may be Email minutes from meeting; and the steps are Type minutes, Clear up any questions, Remember to add X & Y to addressees; ---but I don't add a step that says Send minutes, because that seems redundant. Yet, after completing all the steps, I still have to send the minutes.

I'm trying to manage the lack of "Today" by setting up 7 categories, one for each day of the week. But then they can't be in a second category, related to project or area of responsibility. So if items could be duplicated, and then be marked completed in both locations, that would be great.

Overall, though, I have to say that I came to Lifeshaker from using first Things and then The Hit LIst, and found each of them a frustrating mix of too many features, and not having just that one feature I want.

Lifeshaker is refreshingly simple, but offers the Steps option, and has a great interface. I haven't actually used the "Shaker" randomizer yet but it's a playful option that might be useful and doesn't add anything to difficulty of use so I like it.

One-off actions or tasks can live under any category really and so long as you don't assign steps to them they will disappear from the list as soon as they are completed. As you say though, you could create a General category if you want to keep all your one-off steps together, or put the words "one-off" in the description of the goal or step across multiple categories and then do a search for those words in the search field.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Unfortunately there is no way at present to create reoccurring tasks/steps as there is currently no time scale factor under the hood of LifeShaker. Everything is worked out based on the priority of each goal in relationship to one another as opposed to a 'real life' time schedule. However this is something we are looking into for future versions of LifeShaker and so your vote has been counted.

With regards to the sub categories I can see why you would want to do this from your explanation. At the moment you can't group categories unfortunately and for the time being you would have to turn them all on or off manually. Purely for reasons of simplicity we have kept Categories to a single level as we could quickly see sub category requests turning into sub sub category requests which does get very complicated with regards to the interface design. We will however give this some though with your explanation in mind. There is a keyboard short cut to turn off all categories except one (effectively soloing a category) by holding down the Alt key when you click on a category in the list. I don't know if this might help in the mean time.

I really like LifeShaker, especially its use of color and the print booklet capability (the number 1 capability for me). However I have a 2 questions. Is there way to have reoccurring tasks/steps? Can you have sub-categories? Or, is there a way to get similar functionality?

My desire for sub-categories is so that I have a way ignoring groups of categories, such as those associated with work. At work I have quite a few on going "projects" that I wish to not clutter things when I am looking at LifeShaker. As the category list is now I have to go through the list and identify the specific categories. Although I can arrange them to be together it would be easier if some were indented and I could hide them all by clicking on the upper level category.

As for reoccurring tasks/steps, I have weekly things I need to attend to and it would be nice if I did not have to reenter them all the time.

Regarding the Steps area disappearing - with LifeShaker not running, can you trash your preferences file and see if that fixes the problem?

The preferences file can be found here:

I agree with most of the above. Syncing w/iCal/Google Calendars would be great!

Also, I'd like a way to even prioritize further. Such as a way to order the Goals more specifically, perhaps numerically, or by dragging them up and down in the list.

Finally, my Steps area keeps disappearing when I close the application. I have to re-drag the Goals area to fix it. Annoying!

Yes it's intentional that the priority star disappears when you backburner a goal. The thinking is that as starred goals are always given priority in the grid and backburnered goals are pushed to the end of the "list", a goal has to lose its priority star if it is put on the backburner.

You could always try shaking the grid to get something else showing.

Hi

Putting an item on the Backburner moves it to the end of the list of items that will be shown in the grid. Over time it will work its way to the front again but how long that will take depends on how many Goals you have and what categories you're viewing.

You can accelerate this process by adding a priority star to the Goal and then removing the star again.
