Critical feature for me (1 reply)

I have been using LifeShaker off and on for a few years. The whole "skaker" idea and limiting me to a choice among 9 boxes is FABULOUS for me. I quickly became my favorite app and central point of my work planning. But, over time, one issue became more and more important... I started testing other tools. To my surprise there is nothing that offers me the "shaking" feature -- which is a very natural process for me. There are other tools that limit my view to a few (or one) item to keep my giant list from overwhelming me.

After many trails I settled on Remember the Milk. It has enough features that I can automate a "lifeshaker-like use case". For example I can search for short duration, high-priority tasks in a certain category. But as you can guess this is (far) more trouble than clicking the shaker icon in the app.

So what's the killer failing? The absolutely rigid ranking of sequences within a project. Sometimes this is true -- there exists an unalterable dependency in task sequence -- but I often found that there were many independent tasks as well and I would get "stuck" with what LifeShaker said was the next task in a project when I knew full well that there were other tasks in that project that I could do, or preferred doing, next.

My suggestion? Tasks can be identified as Independent or Dependent within a project. When "shaking" Lifeshaker will offer ANY of the Independent tasks within a project, not just the one that happens to be at the top of the list. However it will only offer a Dependent task once the predecessor task has been completed. You can represent this in the UI by using an outline view -- everything at Level 1 is Independent while everything at level 2 is dependent. Or you can use bullets for the independent tasks and numbered tasks to show the sequence of dependent tasks.

Thank you for reading. I note that not too many updates are coming out of LifeShaker. But I hope you'll consider this feature since it would resucitate my use of what is otherwise a terrific tool -- the only one that really made me productive instead of paralyzed as my lists grew!

.. I'm just 'trying' the app out and with my first clicks I've run into my first gotchas:

- Why oh why can't I right click to add categories/goals/steps - you have to click all over the place just to add something! A huge time waster & interrupter of thought.
- Also if a 'step' is longer than the width of the window, it doesn't display a carriage return - even when you're editing - this is crazy - it should open up a new window really while you're editing.

I was hoping to use this not only as a To Do tool but also as a Creative Notepad and I'm sad to say, already I don't think it's the one. Big shame - I like how it's laid out - much more visual than the other programs I've seen...

Surely the developement is bound to time and costs, but for these features LifeShaker is providing the amount is too high. Maybe 15 bucks should fit.
I'm really enjoying Lifeshaker's ease of use, so I do not want to add extras like times due...but there is an option that I think would be useful:

Add in prefs the choice to have an item remain not completed even though all steps have been checked off.

Why? I use the steps sometimes for the things I have to do before I do the thing itself: the task may be Email minutes from meeting; and the steps are Type minutes, Clear up any questions, Remember to add X & Y to addressees; ---but I don't add a step that says Send minutes, because that seems redundant. Yet, after completing all the steps, I still have to send the minutes.

I really like LifeShaker, especially its use of color and the print booklet capability (the number 1 capability for me). However I have a 2 questions. Is there way to have reoccurring tasks/steps? Can you have sub-categories? Or, is there a way to get similar functionality?

My desire for sub-categories is so that I have a way ignoring groups of categories, such as those associated with work. At work I have quite a few on going "projects" that I wish to not clutter things when I am looking at LifeShaker. As the category list is now I have to go through the list and identify the specific categories. Although I can arrange them to be together it would be easier if some were indented and I could hide them all by clicking on the upper level category.

As for reoccurring tasks/steps, I have weekly things I need to attend to and it would be nice if I did not have to reenter them all the time.

Anyways, here are my suggestions (I am still not convinced to buy it):

- add due dates and the ability to prioritize the tasks by due dates
- add ability to add notes related to each task
- add the ability to sync with ical if there are due dates attached to the task.
- add the ability to sync and be available offline with iPhone or iPod touch

Occasionally while using LifeShaker, I get an uneasy feeling that I can't quite place. It's the feeling I get when using an application or device that is somehow not giving me a full sense of control. After just having had one of those feelings again with LS, I think I know what was bothering me: LS isn't giving me enough information to get real sense of how many Goals I've got.

I'd like to see an option to turn on metrics showing total goals per Category, as well as how many goals are currently visible when a subset of Categories are selected. See the "Source" column in iPhoto 6 and earlier for an example of what this might look like.

Cheers,

Might I suggest that, in the categories list, we be able to keep some of the boxes blank instead of having to fill each one consecutively? I have to present a large submission at the same time each year. It is quite involved. I have named this project as a category, with all necessary goals and steps. It would be nice if I could put this project at the bottom of my categories list since I don't want to look at it all the time.

A few customers have asked us whether it's possible to have LifeShaker launch automatically when they start up their Macs. We hope to add this as an option in a future version but until then it is very quick and easy to set up manually:

1. Open System Preferences and click on System > Accounts icon.
2. Select your user account in the list on the left.
3. Select the Login Items tab.
4. Click the + button, then locate the LifeShaker application on your system and click the Add button.
5. LifeShaker will be added to the list of Applications
6. Quit System Preferences.

The next time you log into your user account, LifeShaker will launch automatically! By the way, this will work with any application not just LifeShaker.

Amazing software! Also love the tutorial vids.

Suggestions:

Allow new goals or steps to be added by clicking on a blank line. That is what I keep intuitively wanting to do, instead of clicking the +.

Also when adding steps, just clicking the "enter" key after the current step should take you to an entry box for the next step.

When I add new steps to a goal, it doesn't update in the grid until I click the shaker or click on different categories. It would be nice for it to update automatically to show the next step once I add steps.

Recurring Events & Resolutions (no replies)

Playing around with LifeShaker for the first time, I found it extremely useful and easy to use. I love it!!!

That said, I ran into a few conceptual problems that the creators might find interesting.

1. I found myself putting down a lot stuff that were not actually goals or steps, but resolutions in order to reach certain goals (i.e. for the Goal: Get in Shape, I put: Go to the Gym at least twice a week.) Maybe the program can reformulate these resolutions into recurring Action Steps, kinda like recurring meetings on a Calender program.

2. I'm afraid this might be going into the territory of Project Management--but for a few goals, it was hard for me to plan out more than single step because depending on the outcome of a step, the steps that I would take afterwards would be completely different. Perhaps you can give the option of conditionals trees where the Next Step might change depending on the outcome. I know it sounds complicated but you can imagine it visually-Trees.

3. iphone support?

Just ideas, beware of the software bloat. I would rather the software be kept simple and miss a few features than be to hard to use.

Duplicate a 'Goal'? And one more question/suggestion? (3 replies)

Hi All,
Just downloaded the trial version today, and just LOVE it!! Very, very cool software! Simple and to the point. Love the color coding abilities.

A couple of questions though,

1. If I have a 'Goal' with multiple 'Steps', can the whole thing be copied and pasted? As in a type of project that gets repeated a lot, but with different client names at the top.
I see that I can copy and paste the 'Steps', but I don't see a way to Duplicate the whole 'Goal'.

2. Also, does it sync with iCal, or is there another way to sync it to a phone/PDA. I like the paper printout as an option, well designed layout. But of course, if that could be dropped onto your PDA or iPhone that would be very cool.

Thanks guys,

I'll be buying my registration here shortly. :)

I have updated to version 1.2 and am *very* excited about the new printing option. Except it doesn't seem to work for me. I get to the printing dialog window, but when I click on "print" the computer waits a few seconds and then I get an error message saying ‘An exception of NilObjectException was not handled. The application must now shut down.’

I have been using LifeShaker for a few months now, but never had this problem before, and even now it only happens when I try to print. I tried to reinstall the software but no luck. Anyone else has the same problem?
